Urban Institute to monitor effects of New Federalism
The Urban Institute, a nonprofit social and economic policy and research organization, has launched a multi-year project to monitor changing social policies that are shifting responsibilities from the federal government to the states. The project, to be conducted with Child Trends, a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, D.C., will assess links between these changing social policies and the well-being of the nation’s children and families.
With a projected budget of $30 million for its first three years, “Assessing the New Federalism” is the largest project in the Institute’s 29-year history. It will monitor, document, analyze and report on the governmental decentralization, which is expected to significantly alter the major federal-state health, income security, social service and job training programs in all 50 states.
