Grant To Pay For Safety Upgrades
Howard County, Md., will spend $82,640 in federal funding to create a full backup 911 center in the Southern District police station to better prepare the area for a major disaster.
The center would be fully rather than partly operational, if the main center in Ellicott City, Md., were destroyed.
Meanwhile, $35,000 will go toward improving Howard’s police/fire mobile command post as well as communication between individual policemen working on a major incident.
Howard Police Department grants coordinator Nancy Barr says that the mobile unit will have its own dispatch capability thanks to new computer gear.
All in all, $117,640 in federal funding will pay for the county’s mobile command upgrades. Some $13,105 in required matching money from the county will finance the implementation of a proposed drug court.
Judges, lawyers, addictions counselors, and drug court coordinators will receive training to prepare for County Executive James N. Robey’s decision to start a drug court in the county.
