Tampa, Fla., the first U.S. city to use a permanent surveillance system along city streets, has discontinued the program. The police indicate that the face-recognition system employed in Ybor City did not net anyone wanted by authorities.
ACLU chairwoman of the Greater Tampa Chapter Darlene Williams is pleased that the intrusion on the public has ceased.
The system was designed to identify the facial traits of offenders by matching those who passed before the cameras with a database of 30,000 mug shots.
