Scott Air Base Embraces New Security Technology
Scott Air Force Base now lets MetroLink riders with military IDs enter through the Shiloh-Scott station pedestrian gate without a security guard, thanks to hand geometry access.
Residents and employees must get their hands scanned and obtain a six-digit personal identification number to use the system; the shape and size of the hand is stored on a computer.
To use the gate the person puts one hand on the system and enters the number. The gate also has a separate entry for the disabled, which can admit wheelchairs.
More than 600 people already use the system, which Capt. Jake Kremmel says is faster than a guard checking IDs. He notes that Scott is the second Defense Department installation to use the system; the first is the Pentagon, which makes only limited use of it. According to Kremmel, the system has a zero false positive rate.
