Clyde Hutson was charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with burglary after the State Crime Laboratory in Milwaukee obtained a DNA match after examining a cigarette butt left at the crime scene.
Hutson is accused of breaking into Crossroads Presbyterian Church early this year, where he attempted to break into the office safe.
Mequon Police Chief E. Doyle Barker reports that saliva found on the cigarette matched a DNA sample of Hutson’s that was stored in the lab’s database.
The database reportedly has approximately 75,000 DNA samples, with the number of samples increasing by roughly 1,000 per month.
Hutson could receive a prison sentence of 15 years and a fine of $10,000 if convicted. Barker notes that the case represents the first time his department has solved a crime with the database.
