Chicago retired police officers have been hired to monitor 50 new surveillance cameras in 911 call centers across the region to send out officers to locations with potential gun activity, officials say.
The cameras have listening devices attached to them and can detect gunshots, according to experts.
The cameras are being placed in high-crime areas as part of a surveillance program with $3.5 million that was seized from drug dealers. The new cameras will complement 30 older units that are already running in high-crime areas.
