Patrol Recovers 24 Stolen Cars In License-Plate Scanning Test
Pilot testing of the Automatic Plate Recognition (APR) system in Ohio resulted in the recovery of 24 stolen vehicles and the arrest of 23 individuals between August and November of lat year.
Two infrared cameras placed near the Ohio Turnpike toll plazas on the Indiana and Pennsylvania borders and another two rotated among police vehicles patrolling the turnpike scanned license plates and notified officers when a stolen vehicle or fugitive was detected.
The system was funded with a $61,000 federal grant.
“Our APR testing illustrated how technology can help level the playing field versus criminals who use our roadways without detection,” said patrol superintendent Col. Paul McClellan.
