GAO Forum Focuses on Supplier Base Issues in the 21st Century
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) sponsored a one-day forum in October 2005 when defense policy experts from federal agencies, defense industry, nonprofit organizations, and academia shared insight into the current supplier-base environment.
After discussing a range of views, participants identified and reached consensus on the top five challenges that government faces, as well as some potential steps to address them:
1. Balancing acquisition risks and rewards.
2. Difficulty managing U.S. government policies in an international business environment.
3. Defining a strategic supplier management policy.
4. Managing multiple tiers of the supplier base.
5. Workforce skills development and the culture change.
