Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski may call a special session of the state legislature this summer to consider, among other things, setting the state’s oil tax. Last week, a bill that would have set the tax at 22.8 percent failed in the House, while a bill with a lower percentage passed the Senate, according to the Juneau Empire. Murkowski wants a 20 percent tax, which might satisfy oil companies seeking to build a pipeline in the state, but most legislators want a higher tax. The special session could be held just before the state’s Aug. 22 primary election.
