While officials at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are enacting a plan to reduce pollution at those harbors, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) also is looking at strengthening its regulations on emissions from cargo vessels. In April, the IMO began considering revisions to its 1997 regulations that one IMO official says were made lenient so participating nations would ratify them and to make them achievable, according to the Los Angeles Times. Cargo vessels around the world are believed to be a leading source of pollution in general and a major factor in air pollution problems around the two California ports.
