The San Jose council is making changes to an existing ordinance to make it easier to remove an elected official from office for wrongdoing. However, the council still does not have the power to remove Mayor Ron Gonzales who was indicted last month on charges of bribery, conspiracy and misuse of public funds, according to the Mercury News. Most council members have called on Gonzales to resign but so far he has refused. Gonzales also voted against changing an ordinance to allow any council member to request a hearing to remove another official for “willful misconduct in office.”
