Teachers unions that support Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s plan to take over the Los Angeles School District met with officials from the 26 smaller cities in the district in an attempt to gain their support. Those officials oppose the plan, which the California Legislature is supposed to consider next week, because they think it gives Villaraigosa too much control of schools outside of the city, according to the Los Angeles Times. One official offered a compromise in which the council of mayors, which would pick the school superintendent and review the budget, would take two votes on issues, one based on population and the other in which each member’s vote has equal weight.
