The San Carlos, Calif., Planning Commission says the public will have to “vote with their wallets” on what kind of businesses will be allowed in the city’s downtown. In response to plans for a Starbucks coffee shop downtown, 1,243 residents signed a petition protesting corporate businesses, saying those businesses would drive up rent and chase off customers, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Members of the commission said limiting corporate businesses would be “undue bureaucracy.”
