Recycled “green” asphalt helps projects achieve LEED certification
Specifying Green Mix 100%-recycled asphalt for project roadways and parking areas may help entities achieve points toward the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the project. Green Mix technology uses liquid “foamed” asphalt, in which hot penetration-grade asphalt is foamed with water and air, and injects it into reclaimed materials and aggregate in a mixing chamber. The mix is then placed, graded and compacted, and can accommodate even heavy truck traffic almost immediately. Process diverts reclaimed asphalt pavement harvested from existing roads and parking lots out of landfills and reduces demand for virgin materials. Using the KMA 200 recycling plant, crews can produce a 20-ton truck load of up to 100%-recycled asphalt cold mix every 6 minutes. Contractors can locate this permit-free portable plant at or near projects and cut down hauling time, traffic congestion and diesel exhaust pollution. Wirtgen America Inc., Antioch, Tenn.
