Effective fleet management takes center stage in Phoenix for FedFleet 2010
Vehicle and aviation fleet managers representing several levels of government will meet from July 13-15 at the Phoenix Convention Center for FedFleet 2010. It is the 10th National Motor Vehicle and Aviation Workshops and Exposition. The host hotels are the Hyatt Regency Downtown and the Wyndham Phoenix.
FedFleet 2010 will include GSA Automotive Federal Vehicle Standards breakout sessions and vendor presentations. The agenda also includes aviation and boat workshop sessions, an Interagency Committee on Aviation Policy meeting, and an all-day Basic Fleet Management class. A variety of automotive procurement and aircraft-related educational sessions are also on tap.
The Federal Fleet Policy Council, GSA’s Office of Governmentwide Policy, the Interagency Committee for Aviation Policy, and GSA Fleet are hosting the FedFleet 2010 conference and products exposition.
Useful education sessions
On Tuesday afternoon, July 13, George Schaubhut will discuss “Green Vehicle Acquisitions 101: Green Vehicle Acquisition Basics.” Course 101, which is part of a three-course track, offers facts on green vehicle acquisitions. The course will cover federal vehicle acquisition requirements, including purchasing advanced technology vehicles from GSA via AutoChoice and how EISA Sec. 141 will impact an agency’s fleet acquisitions. Other topics will include the Energy Policy Act (EPAct 1992) AFV acquisition requirements and defining “AFV.”
Also on Tuesday afternoon, Brent Watson will present a session called “Law Enforcement / Emergency / Special Purpose Vehicle Upfits.” The workshop will explain how federal agencies can validate mission requirements, incorporating them into vehicle designs and move toward standardized fleets. Fleets that are standardized have simpler maintenance requirements, permit uniform training and allow for better asset acquisition and disposal planning. Attendees can use the knowledge gained from this session to optimize the value of their fleet assets.
On Wednesday afternoon, July 14, Karen Kirk and Alexander Sinclair will offer a presentation titled, “Distracted Driving: Getting the Word Out to Your Drivers.” The session will cover Executive Order 13513, “Federal Leadership on Reducing Text Messaging While Driving,” that was signed by President Obama on Oct. 1, 2009. According to the presenters, “With nearly 3 million civilian employees, the federal government can and should demonstrate leadership in reducing the dangers of text messaging while driving.” The presentation will show government fleet managers how to incorporate the mandates of the Executive Order into their agencies, and how to get the information to agency drivers.
Also on Wednesday, speakers Ryan Daley and Ted Sears will offer a program titled, “Foundation for Success: Building Fuel Infrastructure Partnerships.” The session will highlight opportunities to improve the availability of alternative fueling infrastructure to federal fleets. Speakers will discuss current collaborative efforts between federal fleets, state and fuel provider fleets, the Clean Cities organization and alternative fuel providers. The partnerships, according to the speakers, can help attract alternative fuel infrastructure investment.

Another speaker, Ron Dixon, will take part in the Fleet Manufacturers Panel on Tuesday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Dixon has worked for General Motors for 33 years in various sales management positions, and currently serves as the manager for General Motors Government Sales. Dixon also will participate in a Manufacturers Panel Q and A on Tuesday from 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m., where he will talk about GM’s latest fleet offerings.
