City tickets itself
In an ongoing parking ticket case in Pittsburgh, one way or another, the city wins and the city loses. That’s because, essentially, the city has written the ticket to itself.
On Oct. 26, Pittsburgh firefighters parked their fire trucks in the parking spaces alongside City Hall where local officials, including the mayor and city council members, park their vehicles, according to local news station KDKA-TV. The firefighters were there to receive the flu shots they had been encouraged to take to avoid sick days, but that was not a sufficient excuse for the officer on parking duty that day. She wrote them citations.
The firefighters plan to fight the tickets, according to their chief. But, that will make for an odd case, the firefighters’ union attorney Josh Bloom, told KDKA-TV. “I suppose the city will have to go to court against itself,” Bloom said. “The firefighters do not own the fire trucks, so the city was written a ticket today.”
Mayor Luke Ravenstahl says the tickets never should have been issued, according to an Associated Press article. City Councilman Bill Peduto seemed to find the situation darkly amusing. “It’s City Hall, nothing surprises me,” Peduto told KDKA-TV.
