Sheriff’s deputies rescue stranded lovebirds

Two Michigan sheriff’s deputies may have saved a couple’s life — and earned an invitation to their wedding as well — when the deputies rescued the pair from an island in the middle of a bay. The lovebirds set out in a canoe so that the man could make a romantic marriage proposal, but they got stranded on the island when the weather turned nasty, according to The Associated Press (AP).

The Huron County sheriff’s department said the couple headed out in the canoe in Wild Fowl Bay near Caseville, about 110 miles north of Detroit. For months, the man had been planning an elaborate marriage proposal.

He tucked a love poem written in French — his girl friend is a high school French teacher — in a bottle inside a lunch bag. As the woman was translating the poem, she found his marriage proposal written in English on another piece of paper.

She said yes — what girl wouldn’t? But as they were celebrating their bond, the lovebirds lost track of how far out they had floated. Strong winds and waves kept them from returning to shore.

After the couple got stuck on the island, the sheriff’s department sent two deputies out by boat to fetch them. Now, they are planning their coming nuptials, and the two deputies will definitely be on the guest list. “If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have seen the wedding day,” said the bride-to-be.
