Former cops foil would-be thieves
Talk about unlucky crooks, it doesn’t get any unluckier than this. Two teenage thieves thought they had an easy score when they grabbed the tip jar at a St. Paul, Minn., deli and took off. The only problem: Four retired cops were having lunch there, as reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
You know what happened next. The retired cops abandoned their food and set out to catch the would-be tips thieves.
The former officers used their training. Two of them, along with the deli’s chef, chased the boys on foot. A third followed in his car, while the fourth phoned active duty officers for backup.
During the chase, one of the boys doubled back to the deli, where one of the former cops was waiting. The boy tried to take off again, but didn’t get far — he ran headfirst into a 7-foot fence. “He needs to give up crime because he’s no good at it,” the retired cop deadpanned to the Pioneer Press.
Unlucky Crook No. 1 — the one who ran into the fence — was arrested, presumably after he regained consciousness. He rolled on Unlucky Crook No. 2, who had the tip jar.
For the retired officers, the incident was simply a matter of instinct taking over. As one of them summed it up: “Once a cop, always a cop.”
