Albuquerque, N.M., Open Space Division educational coordinator Bill Pentler spent his past Friday afternoon dealing with a poop problem. He could be found flagging dozens of piles of dog feces along a canyon trail. City Parks and Recreation workers are trying to bring awareness to the problem of abandoned poop using bright pink flags as markers, according to a KRQE story. Pentler said they've removed as much as 1,250 pounds of excrement from the foothills. The plan is to leave the flags for two weeks and post a flyer explaining their presence.
The city has attempted to tackle the problem before; it already supplies parks with bag dispensers near trash bins. The concern is bacteria counts in a nearby river and spreading diseases to other animals. The city has decided not to try ticketing or fining dog owners right now since it's difficult to catch them behaving badly.
