Fed up with the Bradenton, Fla., code enforcement department, one resident has taken a patriotic stand against the tyranny of the city’s nitpickers.

In response to complaints about cosmetic issues on his property, Brent Greer has painted his house to look like a huge American flag, according to numerous local news sources.

It all started a few months ago when code enforcement officers showed up at Greer’s house, acting on an anonymous tip, according to television news source Bay News 9. 

“Late February, we received a complaint about a dead Christmas tree on the balcony,” Volker Reiss, the community services and code compliance manager for Bradenton, told the station.

The tree was removed without incident, but Greer was surprised to later receive a two-page letter from the city detailing other violations. The TV station reports infractions included missing window screens, dirty siding panels, loose railings and trash on the property.

But it was the complaint about his home’s exterior painting that really set Greer off. According to the TV station, a furious Greer went to the store, brought home some red, white and blue house paint and emblazoned Old Glory on the side of the 100-year-old home. [Editor’s note: Although it’s a little garish, it honestly doesn’t look half bad.]

"It's to remind the city and all those who live here that this is America," Greer told WFLA-TV. "This is a free country. This is my home."

Greer is due at a code enforcement hearing on June 17, according to television news source WKMG 6.
