Swett, S.D., for sale
Remember when someone was selling a town on craigslist? Well, it turns out it’s really not that unheard of to put an entire town on the auction block.
The most recent town available for purchase is Swett, S.D. Priced at $399,000, the town would supply the buyer with 6.16 acres of land, a house, 3 trailer homes, a large garage that was once a tire shop and a relatively popular bar with an on-and-off sale liquor license.
Currently, Swett has a population of two, according to National Public Radio. Lance Benson owns the town and lives there with his wife. He purchased the town in 1998. Benson told the Rapid City Journal that he hates to sell his town, but needs to offload the property to focus on his business – a traveling concession company.
Stacie Montgomery, the real estate agent in charge of selling Swett, told NPR that she has been receiving calls and emails nonstop for days – some coming in from as far away as Russia – but no serious buyer has yet emerged.
