Punk rock librarians
If you see a man walking down the street sporting a 7-inch-tall mohawk, he may just be a San Diego County librarian.
According to the Times of San Diego, five of the librarians at Vista Branch Library recently made good on a promise to wear the punk-rock hairdos if community members checked out more than 1 million items over the course of the fiscal year, which ended June 30.
J.P. Baker, a librarian at the branch who’s looking a little more "alternative" these days, said the mohawks memorialize an important milestone. “There [has never] been a library branch that has circulated more than million items in one of their fiscal years,” he told San Diego County News Center.
The shave took place at the library on July 11, while onlookers cheered. Fred Albury, a library supporter, told the Times of San Diego, “This whole group of librarians here are motivated like I’ve never seen librarians before.”
But there is more to the aggressive haircuts than shock value. “We want our community to be well-informed, and we hope this campaign will encourage people to read and bring attention to the great resources available through San Diego County Library,” Adult Services Librarian Kris Jorgenson told the paper.
