The nation’s 10 best counties
There are plenty of top 10 lists involving cities – from the cities with the best drivers to those that are worst places to raise a family. But rarely are counties discussed in this way.
Going against the trend, real estate blog Movoto took a look at several key data points to compare some of America’s most desirable counties.
"We looked at 640 counties across the U.S. in order to create this ranking," Movoto's editorial content manager Randy Nelson told The Huffington Post. "We scored each in terms of unemployment, median household income, median rent and home price (higher being more desirable), percent of families below the poverty line and high school graduation rate. The average of these scores was used to determine the best counties, the higher the better."
The top ten counties in the country, according to Movoto, are:
Loudoun County, Va. Highlights include the highest median household income of all counties considered, low unemployment and poverty and high desirability in the housing market.
Douglas County, Colo. Highlights include the highest graduation rates and lowest poverty rates of all counties considered.
Fairfax County, Va. Highlights include employment opportunities with numerous fortune 500 companies, high median household incomes and low unemployment rates.
Chester County, Pa. Highlights include nearby state parks, high household income and low poverty.
Somerset County, N.J. One of America’s oldest counties, highlights include high incomes and low poverty.
Morris County, N.J. Highlights include high graduation rates, low poverty and high incomes.
Washington County, Minn. Highlights include high levels of graduation and postgraduate degrees, affordable housing and high incomes.
Montgomery County, Md. Highlights include high incomes, low poverty and high graduation rates.
Frederick County, Md. Highlights include low poverty rates, high income and beautiful scenery.
Rockingham County, N.H. Highlights include very low levels of poverty and high median household incomes.
