Right to shovel
Two high schoolers were recently stopped by Bound Brook, N.J., police for soliciting snow shoveling services. They were told they could not operate their business without a permit.
This event prompted State Senator Mike Doherty (R) to action. To preserve the entrepreneurial spirit in America’s youth, legislation was approved by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee to block municipal ordinances from preventing children from offering snow shoveling services for their communities.
“Kids who should be learning the value of entrepreneurship and hard work are instead being taught the frustration of dealing with mindless government bureaucracy,” Doherty said in a statement. “Our laws should recognize the difference between a professional business and kids trying to earn a few bucks on a day off of school.”
Doherty added he believed the need for this legislation was “ridiculous.”
