Dramatic lighting display captures the magic of Nashville park
The West Riverfront Park in Nashville, Tenn., an 11-acre civic green space, is a destination for active recreation and enjoyment for residents and visitors. Perched above the Cumberland River, the LEED Gold-certified park includes over one mile of multi-use greenway trails, Nashville’s first downtown dog park and ornamental gardens. The park also has a 1.5-acre event lawn called the Green, as well as the Ascend Amphitheater with a distinctive lighting scheme.
Domingo Gonzalez Associates (DGA) of New York City designed the architectural lighting for the main amphitheater, ancillary park structures and landscape lighting. DGA selected architectural lighting products from Acclaim Lighting to highlight the unique form of the amphitheater. The color-changing ability of the lights gives the amphitheater a dynamic quality, especially during events. The lighting products include Dyna Drum HO QW, DynaGraze Exterior HO DMX and Dyna Flood QA/QW. The project was completed June 2015.
Each of the products are IP66-rated for exterior wet environments. The IP66 rating means the products are rated as "dust tight" and protected against powerful jets of water. Specified to highlight the outer shell of the amphitheater, Dyna Drum HO QW is an energy-efficient, high-powered, quad-color architectural lighting fixture with a wireless digital multiplex (DMX) control option.
Dyna Graze fixtures uplight the ceiling trusses and backlight the “guitar amp”-inspired metal mesh to emphasize the structure’s iconic shape at night.
Dyna Flood QA/QW, a high-powered quad-color LED flood unit, was deployed to wash the inner stage walls of the amphitheater with light. The fixture precisely matches colors of the structure.
The lighting fixtures were selected based on their reliability and the cost-effective range of LED RGBW (red, green, blue and white) displays that were used to complete the architectural lighting installation. The fixtures used included accent, flood and wall-grazing products.
Former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean says, “I can’t think of a better use for such beautiful green space than a world-class park, coupled with a spectacular performance venue to showcase all that Music City has to offer.”
