Small Texas city votes to prohibit abortion
The all-male city council of the small East Texas town of Waskom recently declared the municipality a “sanctuary city for the unborn,” and prohibited abortions from being performed within it’s limits.
There are no abortion providers in Waskom, a city of about 2,200, but the council felt that the prohibition was necessary as a preventative measure, according to the Washington Post. With this legislation, Waskom joins a growing conservative movement across the country to deny women access to abortions.
Both the city’s mayor and attorney cautioned the council that the ordinance is unconstitutional, according to local TV station KTSA. “Most likely we will end up getting sued if this passes,” Mayor Jesse Moore said, adding the city can’t afford the legal battle.
The ordinance includes exceptions for rape, incest or if the mother’s life is in danger, The Hill reports. The council claims these exceptions were included so the ordinance could challenge the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade case, which gave women the right to have an abortion in 1973.
