ASCE releases new manual to plan and design for hazards
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has released a new manual of practice (MOP), Hazard-Resilient Infrastructure: Analysis and Design, which provides guidance and a framework for creating consistency across hazards, systems and sectors in the design of new infrastructure systems and in enhancing the resilience of existing ones to help to withstand natural disasters such as such as earthquakes, droughts, floods and storms.
This MOP 144 uses examples and case studies to assist engineers, planners, researchers and community stakeholders as they make assessments, and plan and decisions. Topics covered include:
- identifying and analyzing hazards, system failures, associated probabilities and consequences including direct and indirect losses;
- failure and recovery profiles quantification of resilience;
- effects on communities;
- economics of resilience; and
- technologies for enhancing resilience for new, as well as existing infrastructure.
