Report: State, local employment drop slightly
Employment in state and local government declined 1.4 percent in 2011 from 2010, according to the latest survey from the Census Bureau. State and local governments included 16.4 million full-time equivalent employees as of March 2011.
State governments employed 4.4 million full-time workers in 2011, down 0.4 percent from 2010. Local government employment dropped as well, accounting for 12 million full-time workers in 2011, losing 204,781 employees from 2010.
State and local government employment has declined steadily during the financial decline. Since August 2008, the total number of state and local government employees has dropped by 662,000, according to federal government records. Most of the decline came on the local government level.
