Cities group begins search for a new executive director

The National League of Cities (NLC) has begun a formal search for a new executive director to replace Donald Borut, who will retire at the end of year. NLC has appointed a search committee and hired an executive search firm.

 Russell Reynolds Associates will guide the search. The firm will handle applications, information requests and candidate recommendations.

The nine-member search committee includes mayors and local legislators, as well as the executive directors of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, the League of California Cities and the Florida League of Cities. The committee chair is NLC President Ted Ellis, mayor of Bluffton, Ind.

NLC hopes to conclude the search before the Congress of Cities and Exposition to be held in Boston November 28-December 1. “We are enthusiastic about the search for NLC’s next executive director, as this is a truly historic time of great change for this organization,” Ellis said.

Borut is retiring after a municipal career spanning 40 years, including 22 years as NLC executive director. Previously, he was deputy executive director at the International City Management Association.
