Professional development at its best
“Public-sector professional development was something that the San Diego Unified School District had never participated in, even though it is the 18th-largest school district in the country and the eighth-largest school district in the city. In 2007, the district did $88 million in purchase orders.
In 2007, the school board of the San Diego Unified School District approved an agreement with NIGP to provide professional development seminars. These seminars prepared the district’s procurement and contracting staff to be examined to fulfill the requirements to become certified professional public buyers (CPPBs). As a result of these seminars, 86 percent of the district’s procurement and contracting staff have met all the requirements for certification and now are certified. NIGP’s instructors were outstanding. Additional professional development seminars have been planned as part of an ongoing staff development program.”

The value of membership
“After graduating from college in the mid-80’s, my career in purchasing began as a clerk doing expediting work. I became a purchasing agent later and remember being handed copies of policies and procedures to review, along with a stack of purchase requisitions. Fellow purchasing agents told me how to work with customers and vendors. While I appreciated their assistance, something was missing.
In the late 80’s, my entity joined NIGP and it was like the floodlights were turned on! We were exposed to a network of peers, the opportunity to take classes in professional development, and also the opportunity to work with an organization dedicated to furthering our profession. I felt validated and confident! I remember feeling smarter when I worked with customers and vendors. I earned one level of certification and then another. Later I was asked to help train other professionals who were working in the profession. Over 20 years later, I can say with pride and confidence that I would not be where I am today without the training and relationships that I have had through my membership in NIGP.”
