Law Officials Ready To Start Expanding Dna Database
California voters on Tuesday approved Proposition 69, which mandates that DNA samples be taken from every adult and juvenile convicted of a felony and from every adult arrested for serious felonies. In a single year, testing all 200,000 people convicted of felonies in California annually will almost double the size of the 10-year-old database. California joins 35 other states that require testing for convicted felons, but is only the second, along with Louisiana, that will mandate testing for every adult arrested on suspicion of any felony, a measure that will take effect in 2009. The California DNA database has helped catch more than 1,000 criminals.
