$2.8 Million Grant Will Train First Responders
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Center for Labor Education and Research Workplace Safety Training Program has received a five-year, $2.8 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to provide training to first responders.
Alan Veasey, M.P.H., program director, said, “There is no better way to protect the health and safety of workers involved in emergency response and hazardous waste clean-up than to give them proper training and education. The courses we provide include clandestine drug lab awareness and weapons of mass destruction classes, confined space rescue, incident management systems for public safety, air monitoring and radiological/nuclear awareness.”
CLEAR has had continuous funding from NIEHS for the past 33 years, and expects to train more than 8,500 people over the next five years.
