New Mexico’s Optical Network to Connect State and Local Government
The State of New Mexico General Services Department, Communications Division, has connected the major state and local government, research, and educational facilities throughout the state via an optical network.
With 200 Gigabits/second of connectivity currently available, the New Mexico network will enable local and state government offices to share information and information technology assets for greater productivity and economic efficiency.
The network will also connect to an existing digital microwave network that provides voice and data connectivity to rural areas of New Mexico. When complete, the infrastructure will provide connectivity to research institutions located in New Mexico including the University of New Mexico system, New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech University, and all state government offices. Other plans include expansions to support tele-health, public safety, and education.
The network was created by Infinera, a provider of Digital Optical Networking systems (the DTN System) to telecommunications carriers and cable operators.
“We were impressed by the capabilities of Infinera’s Digital architecture and the economics of their system,” commented John Martinez, Director of the Communications Division at the State of New Mexico. “As technology advances, so does the need for greater capacity, and the platform provides the scalability to advance us many years into the future,” added Martinez.
The platform combines the scalability of DWDM transport, the flexibility of digital bandwidth management, and the intelligence of GMPLS service availability.
