Fort Bragg Tests Scanner System For Visitor Security
A security system that gleans information from drivers’ licenses via bar code scanners is being tested at two post gates at Fort Bragg, N.C. The information will be fed to databases containing the names of people prohibited from post and those who have had their on-post driving rights revoked.
Exposing the civil security force to the technology, gauging how long the processing of people though the gates takes, and discovering how many people are improperly trying to get into Fort Bragg are among the agendas of the three-month trial.
The ultimate goal is to be able to run every person who attempts to enter the base through numerous information sources, including criminal databases, law enforcement wanted lists, and sexual predator lists.
Fort Bragg officials hope to eventually be able to grab images of license plates, decals, and vehicle ID numbers using the technology.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory program manager Dave Borchert says installing the test equipment at the gates cost less than $50,000. Oak Ridge collaborates with Fort Bragg’s Public Safety Business Center.
