System Evaluated For Prison, Business Access
The Biometric Management Office’s (BMO) Department of Defense effort is implementing pilot biometric programs in prison facilities to more effectively track inmates, visitors, and staff. At the Maryland-based Prince George’s County Correctional Facility, employees are given badges that they must swipe through a reader to gain access to the prison.
The authentication process involves a biometric camera that ensures facial geometry matches previous data for the employee and also does not match an employee already inside the prison.
BMO director John D. Woodward explains that facial recognition technology measures spaces between facial features, which are unique characteristics. “The three-part system provides an accurate, up-to-the-minute record of personnel for better access control,” he says.
The technology is likely to expand beyond pilot programs to be used in business, to prevent terrorism, and in other ways.
