Small Town Police to Share Real-Time Resources
Police departments in the Massachusetts towns of Fitchburg, Gardner, and Leominster are set to receive $375,000 from the federal government to upgrade their computer systems. As part of the north Worcester County enhanced technology initiative, the police departments will use the funds to link their computer systems, which will enable them to share resources and information in real time.
Gardner Police Lt. Gerald J. Poirier calls the computer improvement a “milestone” for conducting investigations of criminals who operate across a number of towns in New England, where small communities are often disconnected and have their own computer systems.
“[Currently], every community has a different database, and every community has a different communication link,” Poirier says.
The funding will come from the recently passed $388 billion federal omnibus appropriations bill.
