NSC volume offers wealth of workplace safety statistics (with related video)

A total of 361 work-related deaths in government occurred in 2011, which is 3 percent more than occurred in 2010, according to the National Safety Council’s (NSC) Injury Facts 2013 edition. A total of 1.06 million medically consulted injuries took place in the government workplace. Governments had more workplace injuries than other sectors of the economy, including manufacturing and construction, according to the NSC report.  

NSC research for the 2013 edition shows that for the second year in a row, the number of unintentional workplace deaths has increased. The  2013 edition also shows that car crashes are the leading cause of workplace deaths in the U.S.

The collection, analysis and dissemination of unintentional injury and fatality statistics have been a focus for the NSC since its inception. The first comprehensive statistical compendium ever produced relating to unintentional injuries and deaths was published in the early 1920s, shortly after the council was formed.

Injury Facts is a complete reference source for safety statistics. It presents the most current occupational, motor vehicle, home, community, state and international injury statistics on deaths, nonfatal injuries and their costs. The latest edition of Injury Facts contains data for 2011 and earlier years, depending on the source.
