Joplin, Mo., says thanks
It’s been three years since Joplin, Mo., was devastated by a massive tornado. Since that time, volunteers have worked tirelessly to rebuild, and the city is saying thanks.
We Are Joplin, a consortium of public and private partners in the Joplin community, in participation with the city, produced this video to say thanks on the third anniversary of the event.
Background on the storm:
On May 22, 2011, an EF-5 tornado touched down on the outskirts of Joplin, according to United States Tornadoes. The EF-5 classification is only given to the strongest storms. At times, the funnel was up to a mile wide and sustained winds in excess of 200 mph.
Around 7,000 homes were destroyed in the course of 38 minutes, not including businesses or public buildings. 158 people were killed, and over a thousand were inured, United States Tornadoes reports.
But the spirit of Joplin was not broken. According to more than 1.5 million hours of volunteer service has been logged in the city since the tornado touched down. It is to those dedicated workers that this video is dedicated.
