Golden State MPA focuses on both conceptual theory and professional development (with related video)

As part of GPN’s series on Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) degree programs and their value to government administrators, GPN checked in with John Binkley, associate dean at The Tseng College of Extended Learning at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). The associate dean’s views are below.

Uncertain economic times call for increased efficiency and better organization throughout all public sector institutions, especially in and government agencies, nonprofits and charity organizations. These organizations are seeing an increased need for the professional, analytical, and qualitative skills of an MPA degree holder. Decreased funding and a constricted environment call for individuals who understand how to steer an organization through current and future challenges. California State University Northridge ranks among the nation’s top providers of MPA degrees and is California’s leading provider. The level of student support and curriculum strength at the college leads to an average graduation rate of 87 percent. Since 1985, more than 3,600 graduates have earned their MPAs at CSUN and now work in major roles across Southern California and beyond.

CSUN’s MPA Public Sector Management and Leadership Option emphasizes both the quantitative aspects of management, like decision making and analytics, as well as the human dynamics of leadership. By focusing on both conceptual theory and professional development, this program offers a broad perspective on the field. This breadth of knowledge results in well-rounded leaders who appreciate both the internal and external factors involved in decision-making and problem-solving at all levels of management.

And at CSUN, students can choose the program format that fits them best. This program is offered online, on-campus and at various off-campus locations to meet the needs of every student. The online option provides convenience and flexibility, allowing students to complete weekly assignments where and when they choose, as well as easy access to the support of fellow students. Students who earn their MPA on campus enjoy face-to-face interaction with faculty and fellow students, and have the ability to customize the duration of the program by choosing the number of courses taken each semester. For the convenience of working professionals, CSUN also offers evening MPA classes one night per week at locations throughout the Los Angeles area.
