Jail breaks: Confused criminals go the wrong way

Life is often strange, sure, but sometimes it’s just nuts — like folks trying to get into jail. No kidding, that’s just what police in Ohio and North Carolina say happened recently.

First up, the case of a woman in Hamilton, Ohio, near Cincinnati, who police say tried to climb over a barbed-wire fence to get into the Butler County Jail. The 36-year-old woman apparently came for a long stay — she had a backpack with her, according to WEWS-TV in Cleveland.

The woman, who was intoxicated, was first noticed early Sunday morning lying near the jail’s back fence. Jail staffers asked her to leave but she refused, responding instead, “I want to be arrested.” When sheriff’s deputies arrived, the woman started climbing the fence — in front of them.

Deputies arrested the woman, presumably after they stopped laughing, on charges of criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. But she got her wish – deputies took her to the county jail.

Jail must be a pretty nice place — maybe they serve cookies — because some folks don’t want to leave. At least, that’s why police in Wentworth, N.C., say they rearrested a man who had just been released from jail, according to the Greensboro News & Record.

The 37-year-old man, who had been locked up for two months, refused to leave the Rockingham County jail in late July after authorities wouldn’t give him a ride to a local motel. Authorities charged him with second-degree trespassing. He got his wish too — he’s still in jail.
