Bible saves bus driver

An Ohio bus driver was saved by what some are calling divine intervention when a Bible the man had in his breast pocket stopped two bullets during an early morning attack on Monday.

Rickey Wagoner, a 49-year old Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority bus driver, was assaulted by three men after he left his vehicle to investigate an electrical problem that had caused the bus to break down, according to The Daily News.

The men approached and fired three shots at Wagoner – one struck him in the right leg, but the two shots fired at his chest were stopped by Wagoner’s copy of "The Message," a contemporary version of the New Testament, The Daily News reports. 

"The two bullets were stopped by the New Testament book in his (shirt) pocket," Sgt. Michael Pauley of the Dayton Police Department told The Dayton Daily News. "There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident, because he probably should not be here."

Wagoner described his attackers as young black males, and estimated them to be in their late teens. He said they escaped in a dark-colored 1990s model Ford, according to The Dayton Daily News. No arrests have been made.

Wagoner told officers he believed the shooting was gang related. One of the men told the shooter to kill Wagoner “if you want to be all the way in the club,” The Daily News reports.

The injuries Wagoner sustained in the attack are not life threatening, and he is expected to recover. Lilly Brown, a long-time friend of Wagoner, told The Dayton Daily News, “God’s on Rick’s side.”
