Sue everybody!

The Colorado mountain town Montezuma came up with an interesting way of solving an election dispute – sue everyone that voted.

According to The Star Tribune twelve people ran for mayor of the town, and candidate Lesley Davis won by three votes – out of a total of 61. That's right. 61 total votes in Montezuma. The problem? There are claims non–residents voted in the election. 

Additionally, The Denver Post reports a number of mistakes in the ballots, including design flaws and numbers that don’t add up.


The suit asks a judge to command all 61 voters to appear in civil court to sort out the mess the petition calls “fatally flawed,” according to The Denver Post.

"I have never heard of anything like this," Andrew Cole, a spokesman for the Colorado Secretary of State's office, told the paper. "This is certainly an unusual step to take."



Residents seem to agree. "Now I'm paying someone to sue me," Montezuma voter Chris Baker told the paper. "It's fairly disturbing that the town is using our tax money to sue us."

It’s unclear wither the suit will even hold up, according to The Denver Post. A local attorney retained by several residents, Luke Danielson, filed a motion claiming the court has no jurisdiction, and town residents have yet to be served with notices to appear in court.
