Sacramento egg hunt ends in chaos

Aah, Easter. Dress your family in pastels, eat a big meal, hide some eggs for the kids, assault your neighbor…

Well you do if you live in Sacramento, Calif., apparently. Thousands gathered at the state’s Capitol Saturday, April 4 for what was billed as the world’s largest Easter egg hunt. The Sacramento Bee reports organizers trucked in 510,000 plastic eggs in attempt to break the current world record of 501,000 eggs set by a 2007 Florida hunt.

Sounds fun, right? Well, it was – until things got out of control. The paper reports toddlers were wailing and parents pushed and shoved to gather up the mostly empty eggs, which could later be exchanged for candy.

“It’s really ridiculous,” Michelle Rodriguez, who paid $140 for her seven children to participate in the VIP portion of the hunt, in which some of the eggs were stuffed with coupons for free food, she told the paper. “Parents are literally pushing other people out of the way.”

Multiple parents argued over whether adults should be allowed to help their children, the Associated Press reports. Many complained that the event was poorly organized.

Adding to the debacle – no record was set because the eggs arrived past the deadline for Guinness World Records certification, according to the AP.
