Cliffside Park, N.J., is using its power of eminent domain to seize 12 properties, most of them occupied, to clear the way for a $40 million redevelopment project. Some of the property owners say the city is just trying to use its eminent domain powers now before state lawmakers impose limits on those powers, according to The Record. Many states around the country have imposed or considered limits on the use of eminent domain since a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year that said local governments can use the power for economic development.
