Mobile, Ala., experienced a surge in sales tax revenues after Hurricane Katrina from spending on local rebuilding, an influx of Mississippi residents shopping there and out-of-town workers who stayed in the city. Now the city will have to spend most of the $6.6 million surplus on storm-related expenses, like a $1 million increase in property insurance premiums and $1.4 million in overtime for the city’s garbage and trash crews, according to the Mobile Press-Register.
