EXTRA, EXTRA/California city has best tasting water
Desert Hot Springs, Calif., has the best tasting municipal water in the world, according to judges who participated in the 14th annual Berkeley Springs (W.Va.) International Water Tasting in February. That was not the first time the city’s water has been rated top notch. The small spa and resort town, which is built over a natural hot mineral water aquifer, previously took home the gold medal in the 1999 competition. Last year, the city won a bronze medal, and it won silver medals in 1997 and 2001. This year, Desert Hot Springs competed against municipal water from 37 communities in three countries, 25 states and the District of Columbia. Rounding out the top five finishers were Daytona Beach, Fla.; Kent, Ohio; San Francisco; and Dubuque, Iowa. Judges rate each entry on appearance, aroma, taste, mouthfeel and aftertaste.
