Former Big Dig safety official admits to publicizing memo
The former safety official for Boston’s Big Dig has admitted that he sent The Boston Globe a copy of a memo he claims he wrote in 1999 to Big Dig contractors warning of the possibility of a ceiling collapse like the one that occurred in a Big Dig tunnel last month. John Keaveney had previously denied sending the memo to the paper, but Thursday night he admitted that, after hearing about the collapse that killed a female motorist, he found the memo and mailed it under a fake name, according to The Globe. Keaveney continued to deny accusations by the contractor that built the tunnel, Cambridge, Mass.-based Modern Continental Construction, that the memo is a fake. An editor at The Globe said Keaveney’s admission to lying about sending the memo “raises serious questions” about his credibility.
