Mecklenburg County, N.C., rejected a plan formed by a volunteer committee led by the governor that would have the county borrow $172 million for school construction. Gov. Jim Martin and the 35-member committee put the plan together after voters in the county rejected a $427 million school construction bond last November, according to the Charlotte Observer. School officials said they were stunned by the rejection of the plan and didn’t know what to do next to address the need for new schools in the suburbs and the renovation of schools in the city.
