New Orleans residents sue HUD, claiming racism
Eighteen former residents of public housing in New Orleans who were forced to leave by Hurricane Katrina are suing the city’s housing authority, claiming it is trying to keep black people from coming back to the city.
The appointment of two veterans of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s administration to the city’s troubled Public Building Commission is a welcome move to one of the commission’s critics. Alderman Ed Smith says he’s received numerous complaints about the commission from minority-owned businesses that say payment from the commission often comes late, according to the Chicago Tribune. Daley appointed John Plezbert to be first deputy director and Paul Spieles to be director of development, both new positions on the commission.
