Marcellus Shale, which extends throughout the northern Appalachian basin in the Eastern United States, contains largely untapped natural gas reserves to provide the United States with previously unavailable energy prospects. According to the Marcellus Shale Coalition, Marcellus is thought to be the second-largest natural gas field in the world, covering five states — Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New York and Maryland. It produced 3.1 trillion cubic feet of gas in 2013 alone, and is expected to produce more than 70 billion cubic feet per day in 2014.
